Flexible Yet Tough Cellulose-Based “Supramolecular Plastic”: Dissociates in Saltwater and Enables Closed-Loop Recycling

Researchers from RIKEN and the University of Tokyo have developed a cellulose-based supramolecular plastic derived from wood pulp that can be formed simply by mixing components in water at room temperature. By integrating a specifically designed cross-linker (PEIGu) with an FDA-approved nutrient (Choline Chloride), the team achieved precise control over mechanical properties—ranging from high-rigidity glassy states to flexible elastomers with 130% elongation.
